Welcome to the Malta Water Association Blog !

The MWA was launched on the 22nd March 2011, precisely on World Water Day. The executive members of the association come from various backgrounds namely economics, agriculture, geology, engineering, history, ecology, chemistry and hydrology.  One can see that water cuts through different sectors, and each sector needs to contribute efficiently towards the management of our water resources.

Water is one of the basic human rights. With impacts on agriculture, industry, energy and health, water management underlies developmental challenges. Water is under extraordinary pressure as growing populations and economies demand more of it. Groundwater is being depleted faster than it is being replenished  and having poor water quality degrades the environment and adds to costs. Therefore, education on managing our water resources and information on the water cycle and the behaviour of water in the environment, are essential for the population to understand how important it is to use water efficiently and safeguard our water resources.

Recently the executive members of the MWA attended the National Conference launching the public consultation process leading to the development of a National Water Management Plan for Malta. This was organised by the Ministry for Energy and the Conservation of Water on 10th March 2014. The MWA was invited to contribute with a message at the start of the conference, and the script can be accessed using this link. The main appeal of the MWA towards the government is to allocate the necessary human and financial resources for the formulation of a national water plan that will serve the national interest up to 2027, and which should identify, analyse and recommend the measures to be taken to achieve sustainability of the country’s water resource.

The Malta Water Association’s mission is to communicate, educate, develop knowledge and raise public awareness on the sustainable management of Malta’s limited water resources.  Here, members of the MWA shall share current news and articles to educate and create discussion on water, which as a fundamental resource to life, deserves.

We welcome you to our page and look forward to discussing with you topical issues which can also be followed from our facebook page and website.
